egypt pyramids These incredible structures were built as tombs for the pharaohs and queens of this proud nation. Throughout this ancient civilization there are numerous pyramids of all sizes and differing shapes, but all pointing upwards, towards the heavens.

Three of the most preserved and photographed are the pyramids of Giza, situated just outside of the Egyptian capital of Cairo. These structures were built around 2500 B.C. and are immense. Commonly known as pyramids built during the Old Kingdom, the other newer pyramids, but still thousands of years old, were known as the Middle Kingdom Pyramids.

egypt great pyramids Over time, the pyramids became smaller, as centralized power was reduced and the cost and time to build them became less important. As time went by, the pyramids were shoddily and hastily built.

But they still remain for you to enjoy. And easily accessible by road or via the Nile river, as all pyramids are on the banks of this majestic river.

There are approximately 80 pyramids discovered. Some are in quite an advanced state of disrepair while others are standing up well under the current meteorological conditions and time. Due to the shifting sands of the Egyptian desert, experts believe there may be more under the sand and yet to be discovered.

Luckily, the newest pyramid to be discovered was in November 2008, that of Queen Sesheshet, located at Saqqara.

Along with the beauty of these structures, the hieroglyphics written in and around them and the sheer manpower needed to build them, makes the pyramids of Egypt a worthwhile holiday location for the entire family.

self catering apartment A question that gets asked a lot when booking a holiday, ‘is self catering really the cheapest option‘? While there is no easy answer to this, as some companies do charge considerably more for two adults and two children, than four adults sharing self catering accommodation and some add a surcharge for just two adults. There are a few bargains to be had if you are thinking about full board accommodation, such as free children etc, but they can be few and far between. The thing that you have to remember is, when booking full board, not only are all your meals included but some drinks as well, which can be a considerable saving for some. If you book self catering there are savings to be made, if you don’t eat out at restaurants every day.

You do get the option of eating when you want to, not everyone gets hungry at the same time every day, some people like to snack during the day and have a full meal later in the evening. With full board you are set to a sometimes very strict timetable and if you don’t feel hungry when the restaurant is open, you have wasted money. It really does depend on the individuals, some like the fact that they can eat at different restaurants every night and depending on where you are, you can eat quite cheaply and enjoy good local food. For people who are on a budget and they get a really good deal on their self catering holiday, it could work out much cheaper all round.
